  • The LimbO protector is a comfortable, easy-to-use, reusable waterproof protector. It is a self-sealing, self-supporting product that prevents the penetration of water to plaster casts and bandages on arms or legs during bathing. It is simple and comfortable to use and will last through the average users duration of treatment. Great for gentle protection of PICC Lines.

The Benefits of LimbO Cast Covers

Don’t let a broken limb slow you down; the LimbO lets you continue to enjoy and participate in life while healing, including activities like swimming. Easy-to-use and comfortable, the LimbO waterproof protector allows the user to keep their plastic cast or other dressing dry during showering, swimming, and even in hot tubs. This unique product is self-supporting and completely self-seals around the affected area. It can even be completely submerged as long as basic precautions are taken. LimbO is non-sterile and is available in models for the arms or the legs, and it lasts through the average user’s recovery period.

    Plaster Cast Advice

If you experience any of the following, call 911 immediately or go to the nearest emergency room:

    • Blue or swollen toes or fingers, or an inability to move a limb.
    • Your arms, legs, or other limb becomes more painful, or you experience tingling or a pins and needles sensation.
    • You experience blister-like pain or excess rubbing under the cast.
    • You notice a smell, wetness, or discharge coming from under the cast.
    • You accidentally drop an item inside the cast.

Some advice for care while recovering includes:

    • As much as possible, exercise your other joints that aren’t in a cast.
    • Elevate the affected limb, and don’t let it hang unless you’re using it.
    • After initial application of a plaster cast, let it dry uncovered for at least two days (48 hours).
    • Stay a reasonable distance away from fire, as the cast can get very hot and burn you.
    • Don’t get your cast wet, as this can cause it to disintegrate and result in skin issues.
    • Don’t heat, cut, or damage your cast. If it becomes loose, cracked, or otherwise damaged, go back to your doctor.

These are just a few pieces of advice for caring for your cast during recovery. Your doctor should also be able to provide some pointers so you can make your healing period as trouble-free as possible.

  • How to Fit Your LimbO

Take your thumb and your index finger, and grasp the black seal of the LimbO cast cover on the outer edge where it meets the body of the LimbO. Gently push your leg or arm into the opening, with toes at the pointed end for those using the leg model. While still holding the black seal, bring the LimbO up over the cast and let the seal turn inside as it comes up. (See Figure 1)

When the LimbO is as high as it can go, pull it down slightly to reverse the black seal and bring it into contact with the skin above your cast. If possible, try to bring the rubber up higher, but without losing the seal between it and your skin. (See Figure 2)

Make sure the seal is smooth and flat against your skin all the way around, and be sure not to damage it with jewelry, fingernails, or any other substance. If you’re using the leg LimbO model, be sure to cushion the LimbO by fitting a soft cloth or a sock the lower portion of the cast between the cast and the LimbO. You should also not walk on hardwood floors once you have put the LimbO on.

    Using Your LimbO

If you’ll be submerging the LimbO cast cover, then you may want to remove some air so it doesn’t balloon up and float. You can do this by lifting the seal and squeezing air out of the interior (when it is out of the water). Make sure that the seal lies flat against your skin when you put it back down.

Because the air inside the LimbO can heat up and cause perspiration, it’s best not to wear the LimbO for longer than 20 minutes to avoid discomfort. Also be extra careful when entering or exiting the bathtub or shower to avoid slipping.

    Taking Off the LimbO

Without pinching or tearing the rubber seal with your fingernails or any other potentially damaging item, carefully lift it from your skin and roll it back, then simply slide the LimbO off. (See Figure 3)

    After Using Your LimbO

Hand wash your LimbO cast cover using only water or a mild soap, and then hang upside down. Let it completely dry before storing. Be sure to check that the seal is not folded and that it isn’t damaged when you are ready to use it again.

    More Information

LimbO is a latex-free, reusable, non-sterile cast cover that is made to last the average recovery time of six to eight weeks, but it can last longer depending on how often and it’s used. It can be completely submerged underwater with caution, especially in outdoor situations such as a pool or the ocean. Always watch for sharp objects to avoid damaging the LimbO and compromising the seal, and avoid actively swimming, as this can move the seal. It should always be used according to the instructions, and you should check with your doctor for approval before using if you plan to use LimbO while receiving medical treatment. Always supervise children when they are using the LimbO.
