Plaster Cast Advice

If you experience any of the following, call 911 immediately or go to the nearest emergency room:

Blue or swollen toes or fingers, or an inability to move a limb.
Your arms, legs, or other limb becomes more painful, or you experience tingling or a pins and needles sensation.
You experience blister-like pain or excess rubbing under the cast.
You notice a smell, wetness, or discharge coming from under the cast.
You accidentally drop an item inside the cast.

Some advice for care while recovering includes:

As much as possible, exercise your other joints that aren’t in a cast.
Elevate the affected limb, and don’t let it hang unless you’re using it.
After initial application of a plaster cast, let it dry uncovered for at least two days (48 hours).
Stay a reasonable distance away from fire, as the cast can get very hot and burn you.
Don’t get your cast wet, as this can cause it to disintegrate and result in skin issues.
Don’t heat, cut, or damage your cast. If it becomes loose, cracked, or otherwise damaged, go back to your doctor.

These are just a few pieces of advice for caring for your cast during recovery. Your doctor should also be able to provide some pointers so you can make your healing period as trouble-free as possible.
