Falls Prevention Awareness Month: a short indoor checklist

Falls Prevention Awareness Month: a short indoor checklist

September is Falls Prevention Awareness Month. National Falls Prevention Awareness Week is September 21–25, led by the National Council on Aging.

Falls can happen at home, during recovery, or while receiving care. Small steps can help create a safer environment.

A useful first step is NCOA’s free Falls Free CheckUp — a short questionnaire that helps you see personal risk factors and what to do next: https://www.ncoa.org/tools/falls-free-checkup/

NCOA asks people to consider six areas:

  1. Find a balance and exercise program
  2. Talk with a health care provider
  3. Review medications
  4. Check vision and hearing
  5. Make the home safer
  6. Talk with family

NCOA’s 6 Steps to Prevent a Fall:

Indoor safety is a list, not one product: clear walkways, bright lighting, secure rugs, sturdy footwear on wood and tile, and asking for help when floors are wet.

Secure Step Non-Slip Safety Socks are designed with traction grips to help provide more secure footing on smooth indoor surfaces. They are one environmental tool, not the whole plan. They do not replace exercise, a medication review, vision care, or home modification.

Facilities and discharge teams

GoBioMed is a Michigan supplier. We manufacture Secure Step Double-Sided Tread Non-Slip Safety Socks — a medical-grade hospital slipper sock with 360-degree tread, a soft knit, and terrycloth lining. They are designed to help reduce slipping on wood floors and ceramic tile and to help provide more secure footing on smooth indoor surfaces during recovery and routine indoor wear.

We do not position Secure Step as a falls-prevention program. It is one environmental tool facilities and families already use alongside their existing protocols.
